Case Study of CBL Integration into Strategic Project Management Course for Master Students

Practice paper 11:50 AM - 12:10 PM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/07 09:50:00 UTC - 2025/04/07 10:10:00 UTC
This case study explores the CBL integration into a Strategic Project Management master's course at KTU School of Economics and Business. In collaboration with a food and feed production company (FPC), students tackled the challenge: “How can global business opportunities be leveraged?” The course followed the Engage, Investigate, and Act phases, aligning with a project life cycle. Students analysed FPC’s project portfolio, assessed its project management maturity, conducted financial analysis, interviewed company representatives, and explored market expansion strategies. Despite teamwork and time constraints, CBL method was found to be engaging and practical, helping the students produce market-driven proposals such as dropshipping models, gluten-free products, and instant food vending machines. The process resulted in a quadruple-win, benefiting students, academia, industry, and society by delivering applicable outcomes and fostering professional competencies in a dynamic learning environment.

Exploring the Concept of Challenge in Challenge Based Learning and Beyond

Research paper 12:10 PM - 12:30 PM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/07 10:10:00 UTC - 2025/04/07 10:30:00 UTC
This study addresses a critical gap in Challenge-Based Learning literature by examining how the term "challenge" remains largely undefined while several definitions of CBL exist. Through discourse analysis and conceptual framework synthesis performed across multiple domains, the study distinguishes challenges from related concepts like problems, projects and competitions. The study explores how true challenges - compared to problems or similar concepts - are more intentional, open-ended and growth-oriented rather than reactive and problem-focussed. The authors aim to propose a flexible definition, accompanied by a set of parameters and thresholds that may serve to identify and constitute a challenge in practical settings.
