Implementing CBL in a professional context at the University of Stavanger

Practice paper 09:00 AM - 09:20 AM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/08 07:00:00 UTC - 2025/04/08 07:20:00 UTC
This practice paper explores the implementation of Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) among administrative communication staff at the University of Stavanger. Over six months, 23 participants from various departments collaborated in interdisciplinary teams to address brand awareness, the identified “wicked problem.” Guided by CBL experts, participants valued cross-departmental collaboration and new problem-solving perspectives. Challenges included project duration and irregular attendance, though flexibility was appreciated. The project led to practical solutions integrated into daily tasks and enthusiasm for future CBL use. The study highlights CBL’s potential for strengthening collaboration, innovation, and problem-solving beyond educational settings.

'BUILDING THE UNIVERSITY OF THE FUTURE’ - CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION THROUGH CHALLENGE-BASED LEARNING

Practice paper 09:20 AM - 09:40 AM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/08 07:20:00 UTC - 2025/04/08 07:40:00 UTC
This practice paper explores the role of challenge-based learning (CBL) in bridging citizenship and scientific inquiry in education. The Building the University of the Future challenge tested CBL as a learning tool, engaging students from diverse universities to evaluate its effectiveness for higher education and active citizenship. The results revealed the advantages and disadvantages of CBL as a learning method, as well as several recommendations on how to apply it better and how it could be better used as a learning tool for citizenship education.

Students’ learning gains and learning experiences in transdisciplinary challenge-based learning

Research paper 09:40 AM - 10:00 AM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/08 07:40:00 UTC - 2025/04/08 08:00:00 UTC
This research paper explores students’ reported learning gains while participating in a cross-institutional transdisciplinary-challenge-based learning (T-CBL). Nineteen students reported diverse learning gains (affective, cognitive, metacognitive and socio-communicative) through their CBL experiences. While less frequent, affective and metacognitive outcomes emerged as equally valuable, with individual experiences often fostering multiple forms of learning gains simultaneously. More results and implications for practice will be presented and discussed at the conference.
