Learnings of two years Challenge-Based Learning in the MSc Robotics programme

Practice paper 03:05 PM - 03:25 PM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/07 13:05:00 UTC - 2025/04/07 13:25:00 UTC
CBL has been implemented, on programme level, in the MSc Robotics programme of the University of Twente since September 2022. An evaluation session with 51 Robotics students after 1.5 years revealed that working in multi-disciplinary groups (different specialisations) is the most appreciated aspect. On the other hand the integration with the compulsory course was valued the least. A wide variety in answers showed that working on personal learning goals within the projects is not always appreciated, while this appreciation grows over time. Some changes to the CBL projects have been made accordingly and an extensive evaluation has been started.

Transdisciplinary challenge-based learning: A case study of intercultural, interuniversity collaborative learning design

Research paper 03:25 PM - 03:45 PM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/07 13:25:00 UTC - 2025/04/07 13:45:00 UTC
In transdisciplinary challenge-based learning, students learn how to integrate multiple perspectives to propose solutions to societal challenges. This case study describes how a team of nine educators from four universities (three Dutch and one South African) collaborated to redesign a ten-week hybrid transdisciplinary, inter-university undergraduate course on sustainability education. The intention was to design a course that equitably reflected the differing geographical and cultural contexts of students from diverse backgrounds. Realist evaluation was used as a curriculum design methodology to support the team to integrate multiple intercultural, disciplinary and geographical contexts and perspectives through course content and design process.
