Challenge-based learning teachers as catalysts of sustainability education: Perceptions and reflections from two European universities

Research paper 04:55 PM - 05:15 PM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/07 14:55:00 UTC - 2025/04/07 15:15:00 UTC
In an era defined by grand societal challenges, educators are called to equip students with key competencies to contribute to a sustainable future. Our study examines CBL teacher’s experiences with sustainability education by exploring teacher perceptions from two European institutions. The key CBL characteristics teachers view as contributing to sustainability education include the development of specific competences eg critical thinking and the embedding of sustainability inherent in the challenges . By focusing on teachers who actively integrate sustainability in their teaching practice, our study highlights the diverse ways sustainability is embedded in teaching and the need for explicit strategies to support deeper and more intentional integration through CBL.
