HOLISTIC DESIGN PEDAGOGIES: BSc BOUWKUNDE CURRICULUM RENEWAL EXPERIENCES

Practice paper 03:45 PM - 04:05 PM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/08 13:45:00 UTC - 2025/04/12 14:05:00 UTC
This practice paper deals with the curriculum renewal of the TU Delft’s Bachelor’s Bouwkunde program. It focuses on design education as a form of CBL and describes the intentions for curriculum renewal. Holistic learning objectives and a holistic assessment strategy were developed to foster the integrative nature of design, design thinking, and design education. At an abstract level, aspects that count for all spatial designs were formulated, no matter how different they appear in various design outcomes: coherence & meaning, correctness & elaboration, communication, and research. Finally, the paper touches upon the curriculum team development process.

Practicing Sociotechnical Challenges in Technology, Design, and Entrepreneurship: A Model for Cross-Disciplinary Innovation

Practice paper 04:05 PM - 04:25 PM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2025/04/08 14:05:00 UTC - 2025/04/12 14:25:00 UTC
This paper introduces Challenge-Based Reflective Learning (CBRL), an educational model that empowers students to drive innovation in real-world sociotechnical challenges at the intersection of technology, design, and entrepreneurship. Through its four key phases—Discern, Prompt, Prototype, and Pivot—students engage in hands-on experiences to practice cross-disciplinary skills, integrating knowledge to develop creative solutions. Based on a case study of an innovative school at a research university in the U.S., this work demonstrates how to foster reflective practice across otherwise disconnected domains. The findings contribute to enhancing cross-disciplinary problem-solving and innovation, preparing students for rapidly evolving fields that span multiple disciplines.
